Use Essential Oils To Prevent Bug Bites

Use Essential Oils to Prevent Bug Bites

When in the great outdoors, bug repellent is an essential backpack item; however, most not only smell horrible, they contain harsh chemicals that should be washed from the skin as soon as possible, bad news when camping. Essential oils often work as well or better to help prevent bug bites, and are not only safe, but help to keep you smelling great, even after a long hike in the woods.

Instructions

1. Create a campfire oil diffuser to help keep bugs away from your campsite or picnic area and off of your skin. Simply boil water over the campfire and add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil for every cup of water. Keep the water boiling and the bugs away.

2. Soak an old cloth in a 50/50 mixture of sage essential oil and water and hang in your tent, near the outhouse, in the trees around camp or in other areas where bugs may lurk. While this natural bug repellents works best to prevent bug bites while the cloth is damp, the scent of sage will continue to linger and do its job once the cloth has dried.

3. Mix 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil for every Tbsp. of almond oil and massage it into your skin to help prevent bug bites while on the go. Not only do bugs hate the smell of eucalyptus, they are also deterred by the sulfur content in almond oil. Better yet, almond oil will help to keep your skin soft while eucalyptus helps to prevent infection and skin irritation when trekking in the great outdoors.

4. Keep ticks at bay with clove essential oil. Because ticks most often lurk in tall grass, clinging to your body as you hike through, tick repellent is best used below the knees. You can either massage a few drops of clove oil directly into your skin or add a few drops to your socks or shoelaces.
