Care For A Newborn Circumcision

Circumcision is a routine medical procedure that is as old as time. A new parent can expect her baby to experience soreness. Sometimes a bit of bleeding or oozing at the site of the surgery occurs, too. Rest assured that these are often good signs that the body is healing itself. There are things that a you, as a parent, can do to make the experience a little less uncomfortable for your little one.

Instructions

1. Put a fresh gauze pad--dabbed with petroleum jelly or other ointment--on the penis with each diaper change. This will help you avoid getting the penis wet. It will also prevent any undue friction which will surely cause discomfort.

2. Consider using double diapers for the first day of the circumcision to help cushion the penis and keep the baby's thighs from pressing against it. This isn't usually necessary, but it's worth considering if your baby seems to be suffering.

3. Avoid getting the penis wet. Bathe without submerging the baby in water. Some doctors will say that a little bit of warm water is alright if necessary. Keeping the penis dry will help it heal faster so that's an important thing to consider.

4. Administer some pain reliever if your baby seems really uncomfortable. Talk to your pediatrician about what he recommends using and what dosage is appropriate for your baby.
