Methylphenidate Side Effects

Methylphenidate is a medication prescribed to treat attention disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Available under the brand Ritalin and in generic form, Methylphenidate is a central nervous system stimulant that doctors also prescribe to treat the sleep disorder narcolepsy. Several side effects are possible.


Most Common Effects


In clinical studies with Methylphenidate, the most common side effects include abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness and weight loss.


Serious Side Effects


Other serious but uncommon side effects can occur and call for prompt medical attention. These include chest pain, fainting, rapid or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, easy bleeding or bruising, difficulty urinating, fever, persistent sore throat, seizures and uncontrolled movements or speech.


Psychological Side Effects


Serious psychological side effects also can occur and should be reported to the doctor promptly. These include suicidal thoughts, aggression, agitation, confusion, depression, hallucinations and unusual behavior.


Growth Issues


Methylphenidate can stunt children's growth by a very small amount, but the children typically catch up over time.


Allergic Reaction


Rarely, some people experience an allergic reaction to Methylphenidate. Signs are rash or hives, itching, swelling, severe dizziness and difficulty breathing.
