Elecampane
Elecampane has the double benefit of being both a natural expectorant and cough suppressant, making it especially nice for thinning the mucus and helping the body to have a productive cough, as well as making it possible to sleep at night without having coughing fits. To make a homemade cough syrup from elecampane, slice the roots into bite-sized pieces. Fill a jar halfway with the elecampane pieces, then fill the jar the rest of the way up with honey. Every day for three days flip the jar over three times each day. At the end of three days, this homemade cough syrup is ready and should be refrigerated. When someone has an unproductive cough have them eat the honey, chew on the root pieces, and eat a few of the root pieces, as well.
Onion, Garlic and Sugar
Onions and garlic are both natural decongestants and expectorants, and it is relatively easy to use them to help with an unproductive cough. Both garlic and onion will help to thin the mucus and make a cough more productive. To make a homemade cough syrup, chop up one onion, and three cloves of garlic and put them in a deep bowl. Cover the onion and garlic with sugar and allow the mixture to sit for one hour. A syrupy juice will appear in the bowl. Take 2 tsp. of this juice as needed to help with an unproductive cough.
Garlic, Honey, and Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar dissolves mucus, and helps to reduce inflammation; and when combined with the natural expectorants onions and garlic, can make an all-natural homemade cough syrup. Bring 1 pint of water to boil in a medium-sized pan with a lid. Once the water is boiling, remove it from the heat and add 2 oz. of chopped garlic cloves. Cover the pan again and let it sit for 10 hours at room temperature. At the end of the 10 hours, strain the garlic pieces out of the mixture and then add 1 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar, and 4 tbsp. of honey. Bottle the mixture up and keep it refrigerated. Take 1 tsp. of this garlic cough syrup four times a day.
