Turmeric, if consumed in limited proportions, has little or no side effects.
Turmeric is a medicinal herb that has cosmetic and health benefits. It is very unlikely that external application of turmeric will pose any dangers. However, if consumed in large proportions, turmeric can have a significant negative impact. Knowing the possible side effects of turmeric is important if you use it regularly while cooking.
Gastric Problems
Consumption of turmeric in excess can result in stomach problems. It could lead to diarrhea and also constipation. Doctors prescribe turmeric supplements to their patients for acne, inflammatory problems and also lowering blood sugar levels. If the supplements are taken excessively, there are chances of bile duct blockage, gall stones, stomach ulcers and kidney stone problems. If you have had a history of these problems, inform your doctor as turmeric could aggravate the situation.
Effect on Immunity
If you have a problem with your immune system and your body is vulnerable to diseases and ailments, it is imperative that you stay away from any kind of turmeric. Turmeric has a tendency of weakening the immune system, irrespective of whether it is taken in a form of a pill or a powder. Pregnant women should not consume high dosages of turmeric and people going in for surgery should avoid turmeric for at least two weeks.
Nausea and Migraine
Turmeric dosages greater than those medically prescribed can create nausea and migraine problems. There is no standard dosage level for turmeric as it is not considered an essential nutrient. However, turmeric or curcumin should be consumed in the range of 400 to 600 mg a day.
Skin Allergies
Turmeric has been used by many people for cosmetic purposes. The antibacterial quality of turmeric helps cure skin problems like acne, blemishes, scars, cuts and wounds. However, there are some people who are allergic to turmeric if applied externally. For these people, external application of turmeric causes skin problems or aggravates the already existing problem. Irritation, burning sensations and skin redness are all symptoms of allergy to external turmeric application.
