Cure Nausea And An Upset Stomach

Nausea can make it difficult to get out of bed and have a productive day.

Everyone has experienced nausea or an upset stomach at some point. It is an unpleasant feeling that usually occurs as a result of a bad reaction to certain foods or bumpy travel in a vehicle, such as a car, aircraft or boat. While there is no outright cure or prevention for nausea and upset stomach, you can take many steps at home to mitigate the symptoms. If nausea persists, if you have excessive vomiting or if it is accompanied by severe abdominal pain or headache, you should contact a doctor immediately.

Rest

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to relieve the symptoms of nausea and upset stomach is simply to stop whatever you are doing. If you are sick as a result of being in a moving vehicle, get out of the vehicle and sit down, if it's possible. If you are at home, get into bed and try to lie completely still. Listen to your body and get in a position that feels most comfortable, whether it's on your back or in the fetal position.

Drink Fluids

Dehydration can make nausea worse in certain situations. One way to settle your stomach is to drink lots of fluids. Anything carbonated can help you expel gas, which might offer temporary relief. Ginger ale and ginger tea have been known to settle the stomach. Aside from water, sport drinks containing electrolytes can rehydrate you and make you feel better. If vomiting occurs, try sucking on an ice cube.

Eating

You might think that eating is the last thing you'd want to do with an upset stomach, but certain foods can actually make you feel better. Sometimes nausea is caused by a buildup of excess stomach acid. Eating dry foods such as crackers or toast can absorb those acids and relieve the symptoms of nausea. In all cases, avoid fatty, rich foods even if they seem tempting. Spicy foods should also be avoided.

Antacids and Medication

Over-the-counter antacids can help relieve the symptoms of nausea in some cases. These are safe to chew on and reduce the acid in your stomach. Anti-nausea medication is your best bet for immediate relief. Antihistamines often contain anti-nausea agents. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about finding anti-nausea medication that is safe and that will work for you.
