Easysprout Sprouter Tips

Your local natural foods coop is one place to find seeds for sprouting.

Sprouting seeds, nut and grains is one simple way to grow a highly-nutritional food in your kitchen. Homegrown sprouts are a low-cost, low-calorie source of a plethora of nutrients, including vitamin C, magnesium and iron. Traditionally, sprouts for consumption have been grown using a rinsing technique. After seeds were soaked overnight, they were rinsed periodically as they grew. However, the Easy-Sprout is a sprouting product that uses natural convection to circulate air and humidity within a container, making rinsing unnecessary. Using this sprouter can make sprouting at home simpler.

Buy High-Quality Seeds

Garden seeds are usually treated with fungicide and pesticides. Find dry, whole seeds, grains, nuts or beans from high-quality merchants. Health food stores, natural food cooperatives and online retailers often sell untreated seeds for sprouting. For even better taste and nutrition, opt for certified organic versions.

Rinse Alfalfa and Salad Sprouts

One of the appealing features of an Easy Sprout is that it allows you to sprout many varieties of seeds, grains and beans without the need to rinse them regularly. However, when sprouting alfalfa and salad varieties, such as broccoli and radish, it is recommended that you rinse, even when using an Easy-Sprout. Rinsing these varieties assists in achieving an even, green color in all the sprouts and helps prevent a compacted mass. Around 24 hours after the soak water is drained, fill the Easy-Sprout with water at room temperature. Gently loosen and stir the sprouts with a fork, let sit in water for five to 10 minutes and drain thoroughly. Repeat this every 12 to 24 hours until the sprouts have completely filled the Easy-Sprout.

Store Your Sprouts Properly

Eating sprouts as soon as they are ready will get you the best taste and freshness. However, sprouts can also be stored for later consumption. Sprouts that have not been rinsed will store longer than those traditionally sprouted with rinsing. Just leave them in your Easy-Sprout with a vented lid and store in the refrigerator. For longer storage, put your sprouts in an airtight container and freeze.

Keep Your Easy Sprout Clean

Keeping sprouting equipment clean is crucial to avoid the growth of bacteria that can cause illness. To clean your Easy-Sprout, fill with a tablespoon of bleach and warm water. Using a dish brush, rub and cleanse the equipment, then rinse thoroughly. Alternatively, wash in the top rack of a dishwasher.
