How Old Should Children Be To Get Braces For Teeth

Ideally, permanent teeth will come in straight and nicely aligned. However, some children will have teeth that do not align properly. In severe cases, this misalignment may cause problems with eating and talking. Braces may be needed to realign their teeth.

Function

Braces are used to realign the teeth and jaws. Treatment with braces may last from one to three years. Straight teeth aid in the ability to speak, bite and chew.

Time Frame

The American Dental Association recommends that children who have noticeable teeth alignment problems be evaluated by an orthodontist by the age of 7. Treatment with braces can begin as early as age 8. For best results, treatment should begin while a child is still growing.

Types

Braces may be made from plastic, ceramic or metal. Some braces may be various colors and some may be clear.

Considerations

Braces may be needed if a child has difficulty biting or chewing. Other signs that a child may have problems associated with misaligned teeth or jaws include breathing out of the mouth, difficulty speaking, protruding teeth and teeth grinding.

Warning

Children of any age who play sports should wear a mouth guard to prevent injury while wearing braces.
