Tightening up your arm flaps requires dedication.
For some losing weight is a daunting task; for those who are morbidly obese, it is even more so. Gastric bypass surgery is a cosmetic procedure that reduces the size of the upper stomach, thus restricting the amount of food the patient can ingest. After the weight is lost, the skin does not have the elasticity to tighten up due to the fact that it was stretched by excess fat for so long. Therefore, the patient may have a hard time getting rid of arm flaps. However, it is indeed possible to tighten them up.
Instructions
Healthy Eating and Sleep
1. Water does wonders for the body.
Drink 8 cups of water a day. Eat water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, since a well-hydrated body enables the strengthening of muscles.
2. Low-fat yogurt and fruit make healthy, tasty desserts.
Eat lean proteins such as chicken, salmon and low-fat dairy. Increase your intake of whole wheat noodles, limit white flour products and maintain a low-fat diet. Low-fat foods include legumes, quinoa, bulghur wheat, water-packed sardines and low-fat yogurt.
3. Most adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night.
Get the amount of sleep required for your age group and try to keep stress at a minimum, as stress hormones make losing fat more difficult.
Exercise to Tighten Muscles Underneath the Skin
4. Consult your surgeon before starting an exercise regimen to ensure that you are completely healed from the surgery.
5. Triceps extensions can be done anywhere.
Complete two sets, 20 repetitions, of single-arm triceps extension. Grab a dumbbell of a weight you are comfortable with. Stand upright with your knees slightly bent. Fully extend your arm straight over your head. Slowly bend your elbow and lower the dumbbell behind your head in three counts. Bring you arm back up to the initial position by extending it once again in one count. Take a 30-second rest between sets.
6. Complete three sets, 15 repetitions of triceps dips with 10 seconds rest in between sets. Sit on a bench with your back and arms straight, legs outstretched. Face your hands forward on the bench. Slowly lower yourself in front of the bench, back straight, by bending your elbows to a 90 degree angle, as if you were about to sit down on the floor. Hold for 3 seconds when your upper arms are parallel to the floor. Bring yourself back up to the initial position.
7. This is a pushup alternative performed on the knees.
Complete four sets of as many diamond push ups as you can do. Lay flat on the floor. Bring your thumbs and pointer fingers together to create the shape of a diamond on the ground. Slowly lift yourself onto the tips of your toes with your hands in this position. Your back should be straight, abs tight. Slowly lower your body by bending your elbows until they are at a 90-degree angle with the floor. Return to the initial position and repeat. Rest 30 seconds between sets. If this exercise is too hard, you may go on your knees, crossing your feet in the back, to do them.
8. The bicep curl can also be performed sitting on a bench.
Do three sets of 20 bicep curls using a light weight. Grab a pair of dumbbells, one in each hand, palms facing upward. Your arms should be shoulder-width apart, elbows tight against your body. Stand upright with your knees slightly bent, shoulder-width apart. Raise both arms to shoulder level in three counts by bending the elbows simultaneously. Hold for 3 seconds. Slowly lower the arms to starting position. Rest 30 seconds between sets.
Arm Contouring Surgery
9. Consult your plastic surgeon to discuss your options. The arm-contouring surgery can be performed approximately 6 months after you hit your weight plateau following the gastric bypass surgery. The surgeon removes the inner arm skin and performs liposuction on the area, thus making the arm slimmer.
10. Keep your arm dressing on after the surgery. Loosen the outer layer if it is too tight.
11. Cover the surgical area with a plastic bag, securing the hold with two rubber bands to keep the wound and dressing dry during showers. Do so until your surgeon removes the dressing, usually 5 days after the procedure.
12. Wait until your incisions have healed before applying makeup to hide the scarring, which is the main disadvantage of this surgery. The initial healing process usually takes 2 weeks. The surgeon makes incisions that run from the upper arm to the elbow or just below the elbow. Due to these incisions, the scarring is quite apparent.
