Behavioral Changes Needed To Lose Weight With Lap Band Surgery

Lap-Bands help people lose weight.

The Lap-Band surgeon places a band around the top of the stomach to create a smaller pouch. It has a balloon attached to it, with an access port under the skin that can be filled with liquid to adjust the pouch size.

Band Protection

Stop eating when you are full. Over eating, carbonated drinks and repeated vomiting can cause the band to slip.

Meals

Plan small volume meals as the pouch can hold only about one cup of food. Plan your meals with at least 20 to 30 grams of protein. You need at least 60 grams of protein daily for good health. Consuming 25 to 30 grams each meal helps control hunger. High protein drinks provide quantity with low volume.

Eating

Cut your food into small bites and chew thoroughly to prevent food getting stuck. Eat meals within 15 minutes. Prolonging eating time allows you to overeat because the food leaves the pouch into the main part of the stomach.

Liquid Control

Do not drink with or for at least an hour after meals. Drinking helps move food out of the pouch quickly so that you can continue to eat.

Band Fills

Get regular band fills until you are able to eat at least four but no more than eight ounces at one meal.

Exercise

Exercise at least 3 times a week to increase metabolism and burn calories.
