Create My Own Headstone

Many people prepare for their own funerary arrangements in the years before their deaths. Making your own funeral arrangements is a way to retain control over your final resting place and alleviate the stress from your family while they are mourning. Part of preparing your own funeral and burial arrangements entails the creation or design of your headstone, a process that can be as simple or complex as you choose.

Instructions

1. Decide what kind of headstone you want. Traditional headstones are made of granite, marble or bronze and usually feature the name of the deceased, their dates of birth and death, and an epitaph. However, customized headstones that emphasize a particular character trait or interest are becoming more common.

2. Research companies that make headstones or specialize in designing custom headstones. Most companies that make headstones will be willing to work with you in designing and creating a headstone as part of arranging your funeral. Check different companies and compare prices.

3. Design your headstone. If you want a traditional headstone, it will be as simple as placing an order for the headstone with the date of your death omitted. If you want a customized headstone, work with a company that specializes in creating specialized headstones in order to achieve the quality and effect you want.

4. Purchase your headstone. Once your gravestone has been created, it can be stored with a company or at your home until the time of your funeral.
