While new and innovative techniques are constantly being invented to treat cancer, most of these techniques fall by the wayside, as they prove unable to stave off the spread of cancer or show themselves to be less effective than the generally accepted cancer-fighting techniques available today. Ozone therapy falls into the former category, as it has yet to demonstrate its effectiveness at eliminating cancer.
Cancer
Cancer is the abnormal growth of malignant cells throughout the body. If left untreated, it will eventually result in death. Cancer can occur in nearly any area of the body, and while symptoms vary depending on the site of its origin, there are nevertheless certain symptoms common to cancer in general. These include feelings of malaise, night sweats, fever and chills.
Cancer Treatments
There are three generally accepted types of cancer treatment. The first is surgery, which consists of manually removing the diseased tissue from the body. The second is radiation therapy, which consists of using high-powered radioactive waves to destroy the cancerous tissue. The third is chemotherapy, which consists of using drugs to poison the cancerous cells.
Ozone Therapy Theory
According to the American Cancer Society, ozone therapy is a form of oxygen therapy, which consists of the application of oxygen-creating compounds into the body to purportedly destroy cancerous tissue. The theory underlying ozone treatment is that cancer is unable to thrive in a high-oxygen environment, thus rendering it helpless when exposed to large quantities of oxygen.
Evidence
According to both the ACS and the Cancer Center of the University of California, there is no available scientific evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of oxygen therapy in treating cancer. Therefore, sticking to accepted conventional methods of treating cancer are a safer bet.
Considerations
Additionally, according to the ACS, ozone treatment has caused death in a number of instances, calling into question not only its effectiveness, but its overall safety. According to research promulgated by the ACS, there were a total of five ozone-related deaths by 2001 and several cases of hepatitis associated with the treatment.
