Use Vegetable Oil Around The House

Vegetable oil comes from corn, safflower, soy and cottonseed, among others. It tends to be very neutral and is good for cooking and frying as it doesn't impart much flavor or aroma to other foods. In addition to cooking, vegetable oil has a number of other practical uses around the house.

Instructions

1. Ease splinter removal. Soak the area with vegetable oil for a few minutes to soften the skin, then use tweezers to pull out the splinter.

2. Wash and dry cast iron cookware, then coat it with a thin layer of vegetable oil to prevent rust. Repeat after every use.

3. Deter mosquitoes in the birdbath. Add a few teaspoons of vegetable oil to the water, which won't bother bathing birds, and prevents mosquitoes from using the water as a breeding ground.

4. Smooth rough feet with a slather of vegetable oil before bedtime. Pull on a pair of cotton socks for silky feet by morning.

5. Rub vegetable oil on lawn mower blades to keep grass clippings from clinging. Coat the inside of the housing, too, to prevent build-up. Oil the blades and housing only when the lawn mower is turned off.

6. Separate drinking glasses that are stuck together. Put a drop of vegetable oil around the rib of the glass on the bottom and the two come apart easily for use.

7. Remove stickers and labels from jars. Lay jars in a shallow pan of vegetable oil to loosen the labels. Labels and adhesives slide right off with ease.
