Pick a Fertility Doctor
Becoming a parent is a dream of many. Yet, complications can arise. When these complications arise, often times we must seek a professional for help. The professionals we seek help from our fertility doctors, experts in the field of fertility (the making and developing of a baby).Of course, by the time we seek the advice of a fertility doctor, we are nervous, we are scared and we are fearful. For these reasons and more, picking out a fertility doctor that is right for us is a bigger task than picking our a normal doctor for our health needs.
Instructions
1. Start by talking with your normal OB/GYN. He may have opinions about the fertility doctors in your area. Have your doctor make out a list of the possible candidates. Tell your doctor that you would like a fertility doctor who is also a reproductive endocrinologist. This means that the doctor specializes in In-vitro fertilization and infertility problems. You should also make sure that the doctor is a surgeon. If you have friends or family members who also suffered from fertility issues and had success, you may also ask for the name of the fertility doctor that they saw.
2. Now that you have a list of some the potential doctors, it is time for you to pick out the first doctor to interview. How can you narrow down the list? You could start by seeing if any of the doctors are in your preferred network under your health insurance plan. You could start by the location of the doctor's office to your home. This is a consideration because you will be making many trips to his/her office. You could start by his/her success rate. You could ask the receptionist about the success rate when calling for an appointment. Yet, remember this can be a hard number to really pinpoint because many factors come into play. Finally, you could use price as a narrowing point. Again, you could get an estimated idea on pricing by speaking to the billing staff of each candidate.Once you pick out that first couple of fertility doctors you wish to interview, make an appointment for a consultation.
3. If you have health insurance, make sure you know what tests are covered and what isn't before you go to your appointments.Be warned, many fertility treatments may not be covered and you may have to pay out of pocket. Make sure you have the money to cover these charges before you begin the interviewing process.
4. Begin meeting the doctors (candidates). Bring along all useful information, including your past doctor's reports from your OB/GYN. If you are worried about being nervous, write down all questions you wish to ask.Discuss your options with each doctor. Discuss his/her ideas on your treatment options. Ask how involved he/she is in treatment processes. Does he/she perform most of the testing or does his/her staff? Take notes. Don't be afraid to have the doctor repeat any information you don't understand.
5. Go and home and think about the interviews. Which doctor made you feel most comfortable? Which doctor took the time to answer your questions. The number one complaint about fertility doctors are that they do not take the time to answer all the questions their patients have. Do you feel this will be a complaint you would have with any of the candidates.Discuss this decision with your partner. Finally, weigh your options and then go with your gut instinct.
