Lap Band Exercises

A lap band is an effective weight loss solution for those with a body mass index of 40 or greater as well as those with a BMI of 35 or greater who have comorbidities such as sleep apnea and hypertension. According to Allergan's LAP-BAND website, most patients are able to return to regular exercise routines from four to six weeks after the implant surgery, and all patients are encouraged to get back on their feet as soon as possible.

Post-Surgery

Upon arriving home from the hospital, lap band patients should walk around the house every 30 minutes to prevent blood clots from forming and to jumpstart an exercise regimen. During the first month, do not lift more than 20 pounds or place excessive strain on the abdominal area where the lap band has been implanted. Each week, build up the intensity and the duration of the workout.

Aerobic Exercises

Aerobic exercises, such as running, swimming and bicycling, dramatically increase thirst. Because the band restricts the stomach's volume, it is important to slowly sip liquids when rehydrating. Cold liquids such as ice water can irritate the banded area of the stomach, so room-temperature water or electrolyte-rich sport drinks are best. For lap band patients with back or joint complications, stationary bikes and aquatic exercises are recommended. Prior to taking part in a high-endurance activity such as a marathon or triathlon, talk to your surgeon about loosening the band slightly to accommodate extra liquids.

Weight Training Exercises

Weight training exercises can be started during the second month after the surgery. Ideally, each patient should do 30 minutes of combined aerobic and weight training exercises per day. Use dumbbells and small weights to work the upper body, gradually increasing the weight size. During the first three months, weight training exercises should not excessively stretch the abdominal area.

Stretching Exercises & Yoga

Pilates, yoga and other stretching exercises can be resumed in the second month after the surgery. Abdominal crunches and sit-ups should also be avoided for 90 days. It is best to start with slower, more relaxed routines before working up to intense workouts. Some patients may experience sore sensations in the abdominal muscles when first restarting a stretching routine post-surgery, though this is very likely due to minor muscle atrophy.
