Home Water Purification Techniques

Many people want a home water purification system in order to improve their drinking water's taste and odor. Many home purification techniques also filter out harmful metals, chlorine, bacteria, sediments, synthetic substances, and other toxins and unwanted substances. There are a number of different home water purification options to choose from.








Water Distillers


In the distillation process, water is heated until it boils and evaporates to gas form. The water steam then condenses to a liquid in a separate container, leaving behind heavy metals and contaminants. However, this process does not remove all harmful substances, such as chlorine.


Reverse Osmosis








In reverse osmosis, water is diverted against its natural flow path under pressure. The water passes through a very fine membrane, which acts as a filter. This removes heavy metals and minerals, but is not as effective at removing chlorine and other synthetic chemicals.


Carbon Filters


Carbon filters are by far the most popular filters. This process filters out the majority of unwanted contaminants, including chlorine, heavy metals and synthetics, while allowing minerals like calcium and magnesium to pass through a porous, charcoal-activated filter.


Filter Mediums


The distillation method is available in tabletop or freestanding models. Most reverse osmosis systems require under-the-sink installation, and can be costly. Carbon filters are available as pitchers, mountable faucets, under-the-sink installs and even whole house filters.


Considerations


There are many things to consider when choosing a home water purification system. You have to consider your tap water quality and contaminants, initial cost, installation, replacement expenditures, and your personal water requirements and desires. Thoroughly research brands before purchase.
