Signs Of Anxiety In Men

Anxiety is an emotion felt or expressed by nearly everyone at some point in life. Yet men are seemingly less likely to acknowledge or openly communicate these feelings. Whether it be self-pride, fear of ridicule based on societal gender roles, lack of education or other reasons, anxiety in men is often misinterpreted, unnoticed or untreated.

Anxiety Disorders

Types of anxiety disorders include obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, general anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder and other specific phobias (e.g. exaggerated fear of heights, insects, situations, etc.).

Realtionship Issues

Unrecognized and/or untreated anxiety disorders in men can adversely affect relationships with family, friends and co-workers.

Health Issues

Likewise, life-threatening physical health issues such as heart or circulatory problems, and possible brain traumas (aneurysms), can occur if anxiety is not treated properly.

Symptoms

Signs of anxiety in men include, but are not limited to, increased frequency of mood swings, sleep problems (too little or too much), dietary inconsistencies, low energy, alcohol/drug dependency, sexual performance problems and/or lessened libido, concentration difficulties and anti-social behavior. Other common physical characteristics include shortness of breath, heart palpitations, dizziness, nausea, sweaty palms and dry mouth.

Treatment

If the anxiety has not devolved into a precarious health issue (e.g. PTSD or OCD), a change of pace and a little rest can often relieve unwanted and potentially dangerous stress from life. However, if noticeable and repeated social or physical problems occur, prescribed medication and behavioral therapy may be advisable.
