Dizziness Vs Vertigo

Vertigo and dizziness are common health problems.

It is important to know the difference between dizziness and vertigo. Although they are similar, and frequently the result of the same condition, they can also have different causes. Explaining which symptom you have will help your doctor to better treat you.

Vertigo

Experiencing vertigo can be distressing and disabling. Vertigo is the perception of spinning and can last anywhere from a few seconds to hours. It is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

Dizziness

Dizziness is a feeling of imbalance, faintness or light-headedness. It is more mild than vertigo and lacks the spinning sensation. While vertigo is normally episodic, dizziness can be constant.

Inner Ear Condition

Vertigo and dizziness are usually caused by problems originating in the inner ear. There are many inner ear conditions that can cause these symptoms, including benign positional vertigo, labyrinthitis, Meniere's disease, autoimmune inner ear disease, vestibular schwannoma and others.

Other Causes

Vertigo and dizziness can also be caused by many other conditions including migraines, cardiovascular problems, head trauma, central nervous system disorders and tumors.

If You Have Vertigo/Dizziness

Vertigo and dizziness are common and often the result of a minor problem. However, both can be a symptom of a serious condition and it is important to see a doctor.
