Ease Eye Strain

Ease Eye Strain

Eye strain is especially common in people who work long hours in front of a computer or who must fix their sight on small items, such as those who repair watches or read blueprints. If you suffer from eye strain, there are lots of things you can do to ease the pain and prevent vision damage.

Instructions

1. Take advantage of technology to reduce monitor glare. Most new monitors, especially those on laptops, come with their own anti-glare filter or you can buy one yourself at any computer store. Glare can also come from the screen reflecting on mirrors, windows or even walls, so make sure you position the computer correctly to prevent this. If you still have an old-fashioned tube monitor, consider switching to a LCD screen, which comes with its own incorporated anti-glare system.

2. Make sure you’re using appropriate lighting. Task lights are better than overhead lighting because you can position them directly where you want them and avoid shadows and glare. If you’re reading or writing, make sure the light is directly on the paper, rather than on you.

3. Keep your eyes moisturized to avoid added strain. Make sure you blink frequently and use eye drops, available over the counter, if your eyes look and feel irritated at the end of the day.

4. Take frequent breaks and look away. Whether you’re reading, writing or working on your computer, simply focusing your eyes somewhere else will provide a welcome rest. If you have been concentrating your vision at a close range, simply take a 20 to 30 second break and focus your eyes on a faraway object, such as something you can see out of the window. Long-distance vision engages different eye muscles, so your eyes will relax and recharge.

5. Consider getting glasses, even if you’re vision is near perfect. Your doctor can get you an eyeglasses prescription that is tailor made to help your eyes relax and deal with strain caused by tiredness or overworking.
