The Use Of Juniper Berries To Treat Urinary Tract Infections

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that starts in your urinary system--the kidneys, bladder and urethra and ureters. Juniper berries have been used for many years as an alternative to prescription medicine to treat mild UTIs. Today the benefits of juniper berries can be achieved by drinking juniper berry tea, liquid extract, or taking herbal compounds containing the berry in combination with other herbs.

UTI Symptoms

Symptoms of a urinary tract infection can often seem benign, but left untreated, a UTI can become quite serious. Symptoms include a frequent need to urinate, burning during urination or the inability to fully empty your bladder. Also your urine may have traces of blood, may have a pungent smell or cloudy appearance. Lastly, pain in your back usually in the kidney area is another indication that an infection may be present.

The Juniper Berry

The oil of the juniper berry is considered by some---although there are no conclusive clinical studies---to have medicinal benefits in the treatment of kidney and bladder conditions. The active ingredient and its properties are purported to reduce gas as well as act as a diuretic. Because it is a natural diuretic, it induces urination, flushes the system and is thought to cleanse the bladder thus treating the infection.

Juniper Tea and Supplements

According to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, juniper berries may be effective in the treatment of UTIs when a patient drinks as a tea or takes as a supplement. The tea is quiet easy to make. Simply boil water and add one cup of the water to 1 tablespoon. of the berries. Cover and let the tea steep for 20 minutes. Drinking one cup twice per day may alleviate symptoms. However, juniper is considered to be stronger as a treatment for bladder infections in a supplement compound---a multi-herb combination--which you can be purchased at most health food stores or online. The compound will include some form or all of these herbs: uva ursi, dandelion, and goldenrod among others. You should always follow the directions and consult with a doctor before taking supplements.

Additional Information and Safety Precautions

Urinary tract infections should never be ignored as they can turn into more dangerous infections. You should always seek medical advice before taking medication or self-treating your symptoms. Also pregnant women and children should not take juniper berry supplements. Juniper berries are known to induce labor so there is increased risk of miscarriage. Additionally, people with kidney disease should not use juniper berries to self-treat as it may exacerbate the existing condition. The juniper berry option is also only intended to be a short-term treatment. If your symptoms persist or get worse, it may be the sign of a more serious infection so you should see a physician immediately. Also people who are currently taking the medication lithium for bipolar disorder should not take juniper berry.
