What Colors Affect Moods

Colors can have a dramatic effect on your mood.

All colors affect mood. The color spectrum ranges from purple, red and orange to yellow, green, blue and lavender. Colors on the green and blue side are considered cool colors. The red side is considered warm. Think of things you associate with warmth, like fire and the sun and the feeling associated with these colors make sense. The same is true for the cool side of the spectrum. Ice is clear, but it has a blue tint to it. Blue also is the color of the sky and the ocean, two things that are associated with relaxation. The feelings associated with color can help you use it to affect your mood.

Red

Red is a passionate color and is very stimulating. This is why it is associated with love and is popular for Valentine's day decorations. Restaurant owners and homeowners paint their dining rooms red to stimulate the appetite and provoke conversation. Red creates a feeling of romance in the bedroom, but it may be too stimulating and make it difficult to sleep. If you would like to add more passion to your bedroom, consider a red comforter or pillows for your bed. This way you can swap them for more relaxing colors if you need a mood change. Pink and dark purple are also passionate, stimulating colors.

Blue

Blue is the least stimulating color and helps you relax. People trying to lose weight serve food on blue plates or add the color to their dining space to suppress their appetite. It is a popular color for bedrooms because it is soothing and helps you drift into a restful sleep. Blue is a cool color, so if you have trouble sleeping because you get warm in bed, the color can help you feel fresh and cool. Other restful colors include pale green and lavender.

Yellow and Orange

Yellow and orange are both cheery colors and have a fresh, clean feeling. These colors are popular in kitchen d cor because they make your kitchen seem clean and bright. Deeper shades of orange that have a brownish hue are considered warm and often used in large chilly rooms. If your family space is a wide-open space in the basement, a deep orange can create a cozy, warm mood.

Black, White and Gray

Black clothing is worn to create a slimming effect, but it also can feel aggressive, depressing or somber. This is why many people wear black to funerals. White is a pure color and is just as symbolic as black. It is worn by brides, as well as by babies for their baptism ceremonies. Gray is a neutral color. It can create a somber, morose mood, but when paired with brighter colors, it has a soothing effect. Gray is an effective color for creating a relaxing bedroom because it is not stimulating and helps you ease into restful sleep.
