Although menstrual pain is not something that every woman suffers from, those who do often find themselves unable to carry on with normal daily activities. The pain from menstrual periods can range from slight to debilitating, so it is important to find relief. Luckily there are several ways to go about finding relief for menstrual pain. Apply a Heating Pad
Heating pads are notorious for helping to alleviate all kinds of pain, and menstrual pain is no different. If you don't have a heating pad, apply a wet cloth warmed in the microwave to the belly. This can help to alleviate some of the bloating and pain that go along with menstrual periods.
OTC Medications
Over-the-counter medications often do wonders for menstrual pain. Ibuprofen (such as Advil) is great for menstrual pain because it alleviates inflammation, and inflammation is one of the factors that can cause pain in the uterus during menstruation. Naproxen sodium (like Aleve) has also shown to be helpful for menstrual pain.
Eat and Eat Right
When the belly is empty, the body is able to devote energy to cramping. Snack throughout the day to keep your stomach from getting empty. Foods that are high in zinc are great for alleviating menstrual pain. Ginger and pineapple juice have also been proven to block harmful enzymes that cause cramps and help to relax tense uterine muscles. Caffeine, milk and sugar can make cramps worse.
Exercise
Low-impact exercise can help alleviate pain. Swimming, biking or light walking are great ways to burn some calories and help ease menstrual cramps as well.
