Diet For Ulcers

An ulcer is an inflammation of the esophagus, stomach or intestine--they afflict more than 30 million Americans. Ulcers are generally stress-related; however, certain diets can help heal and prevent ulcers. A change in dietary habits may decrease gastric irritation and eliminate side effects such as heartburn and indigestion.


Avoid Ulcers


Decrease the amount of caffeine in your diet. Do not consume citrus fruits, citrus fruit juices and tomato juices. Fried foods and foods that are high in fat should be avoided. Keep alcoholic beverage consumption to a minimum, or refrain entirely. Extended use of painkillers such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs can exacerbate ulcers. Do not smoke, and avoid secondhand smoke as much as possible, as this habit can aggravate an ulcer condition.


Protein & Fiber


High-quality sources of protein such as milk, eggs and cheese should be eaten with every meal and in between meals. Milk protein such as casein has a neutralizing effect on gastric acid and should be consumed frequently through the day.








Eat plenty of foods that are high in fiber. Fiber reduces the risk of ulcers of the small intestine. Beans, oatmeal, spinach, strawberries, blueberries, apples, whole-grain bread and fortified cereals are high-fiber foods.


Vitamin A








Vitamin A is has a preventive effect on ulcers. Most vegetables and some fruits are rich in Vitamin A content--broccoli, spinach, carrots, peas, apples and apricots are excellent sources. Veggies should be eaten raw to obtain the greatest amount of nutrients, as when they are steamed or cooked, they lose nutritional value. A Vitamin A supplement is also an option for those who do not consume enough fruits and vegetables daily.


Keep A Diary


Keep a daily food diary and make notes about how you feel after eating certain foods. While ulcers are caused mainly by stress and other health factors, some foods may aggravate or alleviate stomach pain. Many feel better after eliminating spicy foods, fruit juices, citrus fruits or caffeine, for example. Figure out what triggers your pain, and cease consumption.
