Through practice, you can incorporate many of the techniques of Alexander Popov.
Alexander Popov is a multi-gold winning swimmer in both the 100m and 50m freestyle events at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympics. His swimming technique differs from that of many of his contemporaries, and is based on a more scientific approach to swimming. He pioneered the idea of swimming like a fish, meaning that you should glide through the water rather than thrash at it, and that smoothness is more important than raw power. By incorporating some of Popov's techniques, you may be able to improve your swimming times and technique.
Instructions
1. Gain a feel for the water. Popov was one of the first swimmers to emphasize working with, not against the water. This means that to go faster you do not need to push harder or increase your stroke rate but instead glide through the water, and make gentle yet powerful movements.
2. Keep a low profile by rocking in the water with each stroke. This reduces the resistance that is applied on you by the water. As you bring your arm underneath your body, roll gently so that you are effectively on your side. This may seem unnatural, but with practice it will improve your technique.
3. Swim smoothly, and reduce any jerkiness in your stroke. This also will help to remove drag, and will keep you moving through the water. It is important that once you begin to glide you maintain this. The more gentle and smooth your movements, the better you will become. Practice by pushing off with your legs from the end, and seeing how far you can travel before you have to move. By improving this, you are working on keeping your body gliding through the water.
4. Practice correct strokes, not lots of strokes. Popov and his trainer, Touretski, emphasize the value of muscle memory. This means that it is better to practice 5 good strokes than 100 bad ones. The distance you swim is less important than the way in which you go about it. Have a friend observe your strokes to keep your form good.
