Home Remedies For An Abscessed Tooth

A tooth abscess is a collection of pus that's caused by a bacterial infection in the root of a tooth or in the gum tissue surrounding the tooth.A severe and relentless throbbing toothache is the symptom of an abscessed tooth.

An abscess won't go away on its own without proper treatment from a qualified dentist. A root canal or extraction of the infected tooth may be necessary. However, while professional care is a must, home remedies can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with an abscess until you can get in to see your dentist.

Alkaline Pain Relief

An alkaline mouthwash solution may help destroy bacteria and alleviate abscess pain. You can make the solution by mixing a quarter teaspoon of potassium carbonate in a half-glass of water. It may take three or four treatments over a period of a few hours before the pain subsides.

Tea Bags and Tea Tree Oil

Packing the abscessed area with used chilled tea bags for about 20 minutes every other hour may effectively relieve pain and irritation.

Another helpful substance is the oil of the tea tree, which has natural properties that can sanitize the tooth as well as calm the throbbing and discomfort. It can be equally effective to use a toothpaste extract of the tea tree oil.

Clove Oil

Clove oil is a natural analgesic and antiseptic. The germicidal properties in clove oil make it effective for relieving dental pain, toothache, sore gums and mouth ulcers. When applying clove oil to relieve a toothache, use a cotton swab or a very small piece of oil-soaked tissue paper and place it directly on or in the tooth. Allow the clove oil to absorb into the abscessed area.

Clove oil is a key ingredient in many dental products and medications, including, mouth washes. Dentists often use clove oil and zinc oxide as a temporary alternative to root canal therapy.
