Underweight Recovery

Underweight Recovery

People who are underweight may find that gaining weight is just as difficult as losing weight is for overweight people. However, healthy eating and lifestyle changes can make their ideal weight attainable.

Goal

The primary way to gain weight is to add more calories to your diet. Make sure the extra calories come from nutritious foods that won't sabotage your health.

Food Selection

The best foods to help add weight include healthy options like fruits, lean proteins, nuts, seeds, vegetables and whole grain breads, cereals and pastas. Eating desert can also help, but choose nutritious items, such as granola bars and yogurt.

Beverages

Although low-calorie beverages like diet soda and tea quench thirst, it's better to consume drinks that can provide needed calories. These include shakes and smoothies, which are even more nutritious when made with juice or whole milk.

Meal Tips

Instead of eating the traditional three large meals per day, try eating five or so smaller meals. Also limit beverages while eating because they can make you feel full faster and cause you to eat less.

Exercise

Exercising can help build heavier muscle tissue and also increase your appetite, which will make it easier to consume more food.
