Identify Lead Poisoning

Lead poisoning is now a big concern for many parents, especially since numerous toys and other children’s products have recently been recalled due to concerns that they may be contaminated with lead. Experts say that most cases of lead poisoning are caused by long term exposure to low levels of the toxin. If you are concerned that your child may have been exposed, here are some signs to watch for.

Instructions

1. Watch for physical symptoms. They include nausea and vomiting, chronic fatigue, stomachaches, constipation or diarrhea, headache, muscle weakness and higher than normal rates of tooth decay. Exposed children may also be small for their age and experience a mental decline.

2. Observe your child for behavioral problems. Behavioral symptoms include irritability or aggressiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness, learning disabilities, loss of appetite and a lack of interest in play.

3. Look for neurological problems. These symptoms include poor coordination, weakness in the hands and feet, seizures, paralysis and coma. These symptoms require immediate medical attention.
