Relieve Sciatica

Sciatica is the medical definition of a condition that involves the pinching of the sciatic nerve, which may be caused by a variety of conditions. The sciatic nerve runs from the spine, down the lower back (lumbar area), the buttocks and down the back of one or both legs. Sciatica can affect both children and adults, though the condition is more common in adults, caused in most situations by poor lifting techniques or pinched nerves caused by herniated discs or degeneration of bones and tissues of the spine caused by natural wear and tear.








Sensations of pain traveling from the lower back, down the buttock and down the back of one or both legs are one of the most common symptoms of sciatica. The pain limits movement, and may manifest itself as intense, sharp and stabbing pain or a steady throb when sitting, standing or lying down.

Instructions


1. Take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofin for pain relief.


2. Apply a hot or cold pack to the lower back region and hip area for approximately 20 minutes at a time to help provide relief.


3. Stretch forward very slowly, if possible, bending forward and trying to reach hands to the knees or lower if possible, to help stretch muscles in the lower back. Move very slowly during this process. Avoid bouncing and abrupt twisting movements when stretching.


4. Exercise on a regular basis to help strengthen lower-back and abdominal muscles. This will also help with core strength and stabilizing the pelvic girdle and lumbar (lower) spine muscles. Low-impact exercises, like walking and working out on an elliptical machine, are best.


5. Try alternative treatments for the relief of sciatica such as acupuncture and massage therapies. Many people find relief through chiropractic adjustment. Others find that hypnosis works well to help cope with pain.
