Organize Using Banker'S Boxes

Banker's boxes are designed to hold documents, but this isn't the only thing they are good for. These sturdy, handled boxes are well suited for use as home organizational storage containers for everything from seasonal clothing to paint supplies. Banker's boxes can be purchased at a local home improvement or office supply store, and are typically inexpensive. Three different sizes are generally available: 10 inches by 12 inches by 15 inches; 10 inches by 12 inches by 24 inches; and 4 inches by 9 inches by 23 inches.

Instructions

Using Banker's Boxes to Store Seasonal Clothing

1. Assemble the banker's boxes by following the folding directions.

2. Group seasonal items by type. Put gloves, hats, mittens, scarfs and other small winter items in one box. Use one box for sweaters, one for coats and one for boots. For summer items, have a box for shorts, one for bathing suits, one for hats and sunglasses and one or more for beach towels.

3. Write a list of contents on all sides of each box. This way no matter which way the box ends up facing you'll be able to identify the contents without having to open up the box.

4. Secure the tops of the banker's boxes with packing tape.

5. Stack the boxes in the garage or basement.

Using Banker's Boxes to Organize a Garage

6. Line up banker's boxes along the back wall of the garage with the tops removed.

7. Fill the boxes with sports equipment, car supplies, gardening equipment, fertilizers, rags and cleaning supplies. This way, when you need to do a job, all of the items you need are stored together. The box is a great way to haul them all to your project site.

8. Place the lids of the boxes on a shelving unit, upside down. This will create a lipped edge on the shelves that will prevent items from falling off if they are jostled.

Using Banker's Boxes in a Playroom

9. Separate toys, DVDs and art supplies into piles. Further separate the toys into categories by type and age group.

10. Label banker's boxes on both ends with both the type of item and the intended age group. If you are doing this for your own children, you can use their names instead of ages.

11. Fill the boxes and put them on a shelving unit. Be sure to put the items for younger children on the lower shelves so they can get them without help.
