Chinese Herbs For Chronic Tension Headaches

The pain and discomfort of chronic tension headaches can be a major barrier to the enjoyment of life. There are several Chinese herbs that have been known to ease the effects of frequent tension headaches.

Chinese Licorice Root

The pain from tension headaches can be eased by Chinese licorice root, which contains properties similar to aspirin. Approximately 6 grams can help stave off headache discomfort.

Peppermint

When rubbed into the forehead or back of the neck, oil of peppermint---known as Bo He in Chinese medicine---also possesses aspirin-like qualities.

Poria Cocos

Poria cocos, otherwise known as Indian Bread, is a mushroom commonly utilized in Chinese medicine. It is available from many herbal supply stores and is often used as part of calming herbal mixtures.

White Willow Bark, Valerian and Wild Lettuce

While white willow bark serves as an anti-inflammatory, valerian and wild lettuce both have relaxing properties. This combination makes an excellent balm for a tension headache. Be cautious with white willow bark and do not take more than 60 milligrams per day.

Ginger

Ginger is a multifunctional herb used to treat a variety of ailments; it can relieve pain and counteract tension. Rubbing a small amount of ginger oil into the temples can bring relief from a tension headache.
