Kill Lice With Neem & Olive Oil

Lice are wingless parasites that feed on blood. They commonly infest human hair and scalps. Over-the-counter lice treatments containing pesticides are not always effective. Moreover, they may have long-term health effects, particularly for children. Neem oil and olive oil are natural alternatives to pesticide-based treatments of head lice. Both oils, applied to the scalp, can smother and kill lice. Neem oil, however, also has antiseptic qualities, which help kill the eggs of lice as well.

Instructions

1. Use a special lice comb on the hair. Part the hair into sections, and comb through each section thoroughly. Dip the comb regularly into water or vinegar and wipe on a cloth. Go over the head several times, as lice can move quickly. Look for adult lice, nits (juveniles), and eggs. A strong light source and a magnifying glass can be helpful.

2. Apply the oils. Dilute the neem oil with olive oil before applying to the scalp. Use a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio of olive oil to neem oil, according to DiscoverNeem.com.

3. Let the oils penetrate. Put on a shower cap and leave the oils on the scalp for at least an hour, but preferably overnight.

4. Comb out the hair with the lice comb. Wash hair thoroughly. Mix one part of vinegar with four parts water and use as a rinse aid to dislodge the oils.
