Directions For Aroma Therapy Bags

Aroma therapy neck bag and eye mask

Stress. Insomnia. Stuffy nose. Headache. Sore muscles. These are just a few of the problems that can be eased by using an aroma therapy bag. Aroma therapy bags can be made using rice scented with essential oils. Whether you make your own or buy them, aroma therapy bags can be used heated or chilled.

Make Your Own

To make an aroma therapy rice bag, pour 2 teaspoons of essential oil--lavender, chamomile or rose are good for relaxation--into a quart glass Mason jar. Cover the top with plastic wrap, put the lid on and roll the jar to coat the inside with essential oils. Open the jar and add 3 cups of dry rice. Place the plastic wrap and lid back on and lay the jar on its side. Roll the jar several times each day for three days.

Aroma therapy rice bags are not difficult to make. Alicia on the Cancer Lynx website fills a long tube sock with rice and ties or sews the end. If you want to make one out of material, Sew Mama Sew has a tutorial that includes pictures.

Hot or Cold

To heat the aroma therapy bag, put it on a plate and place in a microwave. The amount of time for heating will vary depending upon the size of the bag. Begin by heating the bag on high for one minute; check to see whether it is warm to the touch and reheat if needed.

For a cold bag, place the aroma therapy bag in a plastic zip-style bag, close the plastic bag and put it in the freezer. The plastic bag will protect the food in the freezer from absorbing the smell from the essential oils.
