Intra-abdominal injuries are a serious matter and can lead to death if left untreated. First aid consists of identification of the condition so that emergency services can be contacted to deliver the victim to an appropriate medical facility.
Instructions
1. Ask the victim a question to see if they are responsive. If any trauma victim is unconscious or unresponsive, call 911.
2. If the victim is responsive, you should ask them about their injury. Sharp abdominal pains, as well as sudden swelling or distension in the abdomen, is an urgent medical emergency. A sharp pain is an indicator of a potential organ rupture, and swelling is a common indicator of internal bleeding. Call 911.
3. If the victim is coherent and refuses emergency treatment, advise them to watch out for blood in their urine or stools and to call emergency services if the feel a sharp stabbing pain in their abdomen. Not all abdominal trauma will show immediate signs that will indicate they are urgent medical emergencies.
