As one of the most commonly used oils in aromatherapy, juniper oil is known as an antiseptic and astringent in helping a variety of ailments, such as acne, eczema, kidney stones, dehydration and digestive issues. It is extracted from berries, wood and needles of the juniper plant and has a refreshing, earthy fragrance.
Skin
Juniper is considered a rubefacient, which means that when the oil is applied to the skin it becomes pink or light red in color. The coloring of the skin indicates an increase in blood circulation, which helps to keep skin healthy and rejuvenated. Juniper oil also prompts the pores to open and sweat out toxins, excess salt and water. By using it on the skin, opened pores are cleaner and excess oil is removed to prevent acne, eczema or other skin ailments.
An ideal use for the skin is to add a few drops to an unscented lotion or cream and apply to the face to reduce excess oil production and clear up acne with a gentle treatment.
Digestion
Uses for juniper oil include benefits for the digestion system. The oil is often referred to as stomachic, which means that the oil helps the stomach to digest and function at optimal levels. It also helps to regulate stomach bile and acids, relieving stomach pains and ulcers. Ulcers may also be prevented through the use of juniper, since it regulates bile to reduce the effect of acid on the stomach lining.
Aside from digestion, it boosts circulation to release toxins from the body like uric acid. It also detoxifies the blood, which helps to remove additional toxins like pollutants and metals that find their way into the blood stream.
To take juniper oil for digestion, dilute one drop of the oil in a cup of hot water and drink two times a day.
Diuretic
One of the most common uses for juniper oil is as a diuretic, which helps the body increase urination to get rid of excess water. Those who suffer from kidney stones, bloating or high sodium levels benefit by using it. Individuals also use juniper oil to treat urinary tract infections.
Before using juniper oil as a diuretic, it is important to check with a doctor to be sure it is safe in your specific case. Pregnant women should not take it, since it may cause contractions in the uterus, and its advised against for long-term use, to prevent any kidney damage.
To use as a diuretic, use three to four drops of oil into four cups of water and drink before meals to relieve bloating and help pass kidney stones.
