Side Effects Of A Hair Transplants

Baldness

Male baldness was once a touchy subject for guys. It still is for some. Some men feel more confident and relaxed with a full head of hair and are willing to get one through various means. One way is from hair transplants. Hair transplants are still popular among those who have a desire for follicle enhancement. But transplants, like many procedures, do come with side effects.

The Hair Transplant Procedure

Hair transplants procedures often involve taking hair you already have and moving it to where you don't have it. Doctors would measure the square centimeters of area where you would need hair transplanted. They would take follicle hair groups called "follicular units" from pre-existing areas on your head and then transplant (or graft) about 30 or so to each square centimeter. The transplant involves anesthesia. These grafts, when fully healed, would start to grow hair over time. The cost of this procedure depends on how many grafts are done. A doctor will normally do up to 2,500 grafts per session at around $5 per graft.

Hair transplant procedures, as mentioned earlier, do not come without side effects. One side effect is headaches. They come from tugging and pulling on the scalp during the hair transplant procedure. Swelling of the scalp is also to be expected, since you have small grafts of hair growing in places that were once barren. Swelling may even occur around the eye and forehead area, but it is a less common side effect. Infections, although extremely rare, can also occur.

One shocking side effect would be additional hair loss. This happens because your pre-existing hair growth system can be in "shock" from the procedure and start to shed. Even the newly transplanted hair can come out in small patches. But once your hair overcomes it, you will see it start to grow. You also have to remember that hair transplants won't slow down your normal hair loss because the transplanted follicles are just relocated hair.

It is very important that you understand everything involved with a hair transplant procedure before signing up for one. Some side effects may have a larger effect on you than others if you are especially susceptible. For instance, if you suffer from migraines and your proposed hair transplant procedure is going to be done over several sessions, you might want to consider another alternative such as hair growth products or even shaving it all off. Maybe bald is beautiful after all.
