Folic acid is a prescription medication that is given to people who are lacking folic acid, whether from their diet or from anemia. Many prenatal vitamins contain folic acid as well because it prevents certain anemia-related complications during pregnancy. While side effects of the medications are uncommon, there have been a few common, non-threatening side effects.


Physical Symptoms








Folic acid can cause a bitter or foul taste of the mouth. In addition, a person may feel bloated or have an increased abdominal size, also know as abdominal distension.


Appetite


People who use folic acid may also find that they do not feel hungry. They may have a decreased appetite.


Bowel and Bladder


Folic acid can also cause increased gas or flatulence.


Mental Symptoms


People who have been taking folic acid have reported trouble focusing and concentrating.


Sleep Problems


Insomnia is also a reported side effect of people who take folic acid.


Dangerous Side Effects


There are some dangerous side effects of folic acid that need to be reported immediately, These include trouble breathing, feeling that your throat is closing, the swelling of the tongue and hives.
