Color & Meaning Of Crystals

Color & Meaning of Crystals

Color not only has a strong impact on moods and feelings, it is sometimes used in alternative healing. Crystals are found in every shade imaginable. Over the centuries, as people touched, wore and used gemstones and crystals, their colors came to have associated meanings. A few of these are detailed here.

Red

Red symbolizes vitality, strength, courage and action. Red crystals are used to stimulate and strengthen the body and to bring a sense of warmth. Red energizes the root chakra, one of seven energy centers in the body. Use red crystals to increase confidence and energy levels.

Pink

The color of unconditional love, pink is a gentle shade that symbolizes connection, compassion and openness. Pink crystals can be used for relaxation, calmness and contentment. Pink is associated with the heart chakra. Pink crystals can help one forgive old hurts.

Brown

Brown represents the earth and order. Brown crystals have a grounding, stabilizing quality, and may be used as protectors in one's environment. As shades of brown vary considerably, brown crystals should be studied for underlying tones of red, blue, or other colors, and used with that in mind.

Yellow

Like sunlight, the color yellow is energizing. Linked to the solar plexus chakra center, yellow symbolizes joy, happiness, mental clarity and wisdom. Yellow crystals or gems are used for promoting well-being, joy and positive self-expression.

White

Light is all colors combined. The color white is thought of similarly. All colors are present within it and can be drawn upon. White is a symbol of transformation. It also represents purity, wholeness and cleanliness. It can be used to clear clutter or obstacles, to facilitate new beginnings or to purify thoughts or actions.

The Rainbow of Colors

This very brief primer on the meaning of colors in crystals, minerals or gems only scratches the surface. The Emily Gems link (see References) has more detailed information. A book that provides an in-depth description of 20 crystal colors, a list of associated gems or crystals and information on their uses in alternative healing is "Crystals" by Jennie Harding, Walking Stick Press.
