Other herbal treatments for chronic hepatitis have antiviral properties to keep the hepatitis from recurring as often. Two or three cups of strong lemon balm tea per day can keep hepatitis at bay, as can one teaspoon of liquid St. John's Wort in water or tea two or three times per day. Powdered shiitake extract capsules can be taken for their antiviral properties; at least two and up to five grams per day can be taken. Additionally, fresh garlic that is cooked or in capsules can provide desired results. Because garlic is safe, it can be taken in doses best tolerated by the patient. Four to twelve ounces of powdered schisandra can also be added to tea depending on body weight; it is said to protect the liver and help rebuild it.
