Most Common Genetic Diseases

Genetic diseases are caused by abnormal genes which don't work properly. It can be minor, such as a mutation in one gene. It can also be a major abnormality, such as missing an entire set of chromosomes.

Cystic Fibrosis

According to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, cystic fibrosis (CF) affects 30,000 Americans, mostly Caucasian. Sufferers secrete abnormal bodily fluids and the body does not properly cleanse the lungs, leading to chronic infections.

Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle cell anemia is common among African-Americans. Red blood cells become stiff, sticky, C-shaped and lose oxygen; the cells block blood vessels which leads to pain, organ damage and infections.

Classic Hemophilia

People with classic hemophilia are lacking a protein needed to form blood clots, which means, when injured, hemophiliacs will bleed longer than other people.

Thalessemias

Thalassemias are common inherited blood disorders in which the body does not produce enough healthy red blood cells or the iron-rich protein hemoglobin. People with thalassemias tend to be anemic.

Tay Sachs

Tay Sachs is a fatal disease affecting children in which an enzyme called hexosaminidase is missing. This causes a fatty substance to build up on nerve cells, and leads to a degeneration of the central nervous system.
