What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Lisinopril

Lisinopril, often prescribed under the brand names Prinivil or Zestril, is a drug used to treat individuals with high blood pressure (hypertension). The use of Lisinopril may cause a number of side effects, all of which depend on the dosage and the particular individual.

What is Lisinopril?

Lisinopril is a prescription drug classified as an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. This type of drug blocks certain chemicals in the body so the blood vessels can relax and enlarge. In doing so, Lisinopril treats high blood pressure and improves blood flow after an individual has suffered a heart attack. Lisinopril may have other uses which can be determined by your doctor.

Common Side Effects

Users of Lisinopril may experience a few common side effects including dizziness, tiredness, headache, diarrhea, and cough. According to Drugs.com, in a clinical trial, 13 percent of patients experienced dizziness, while 6 percent experienced headache. Diarrhea only occurred in 4 percent of patients. Although these side effects are less serious than others, seek immediate medical attention if one or several persist.

Serious Side Effects

The use of Lisinopril may lead to the occurrence of the following serious side effects: irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness and drowsiness, irregular urination, chest pain, unusual weight loss or gain, fever, chills, muscle weakness, stomach pain, yellowing of the skin, and difficulty swallowing. Severe allergic reaction, signaled by extreme skin rash and irritation or swelling of the face, may also occur because of use. Contact a doctor immediately if side effects occur.

Using and Storing Lisinopril

Lisinopril can be taken with or without food; however, it must be taken with an 8-oz glass of water. It is important to keep hydrated while taking the medication to avoid intensifying any side effects. Take a missed dose as soon as possible, but never take a double dose to compensate. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture.

Warning

Use with extreme caution in the elderly and children under 6 years old. Avoid the intake of alcohol as it may exacerbate the side effects of dizziness or drowsiness. Drugs.com reports that the use of Lisinopril may lead to angioedema, a condition in which severe swelling occurs. Black patients using Lisinopril may find the medication less effective and can be more susceptible to side effects.
