Wear Compression Stockings

Elastic compression stockings, such as Sigvaris compression stockings, Jobst support hose, and Mediven compression stockings, keep blood from pooling in the legs and reduce leg swelling and edema often found in people with varicose veins. Compression stockings also help people at risk for the health conditions deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism by preventing swelling and blood clots. Despite the stockings' advantages, the tough elastic that's used to make compression stockings can be difficult to wear and adjust, especially if you have arthritis or other problems that limit hand movement or function.

Many people have trouble wearing compression stockings. A study published in the September 2008 issue of the American Journal of Nursing found that 29% of patients wore the wrong size compression stockings and used compression stockings incorrectly. One in five patients didn't even know why their doctors told them to wear compression stockings, the study found.

Here are some tips on wear compression stockings, such as Juzo, Jobst, Ames Walker, or other brands, correctly.

Instructions

1. First, turn the upper part of the stocking inside out to the heel and gently slide the stocking down to the foot part.

2. Now carefully slip your foot into the foot part of the stocking.

3. Gently pull the remaining part of the compression stocking over your heel.

4. Use the palms of your hands to massage the stocking up toward your knee. Try not to pull at the upper edge of the compression stocking.

5. Now use the same steps for the other leg.

6. **Compression thigh high stockings and hosiery: Use the steps above until the compression stocking is by your knee. Using the palms of your hands, ease the stocking upward (don't pull on the upper edge of the stocking) until it reaches your upper thigh.

7. **Compression pantyhose: Use the same steps to gently ease the pantyhose up to your waist.
