Ease The Pain Of Bites From A Fire Ant

Over the counter products soothe red ant bites.

When a fire ant colony is disturbed, the ants release pheromones that prompt a group attack. The ants' powerful jaws create a biting sensation, while a stinger injects the skin with venom. Some people suffer a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock after a fire ant bite. Anaphylactic shock requires immdiate medical treatment. For a non-allergic red ant bite, ease the pain using over-the-counter products.

Instructions

1. Elevate the bite area to reduce painful swelling.

2. Apply ice or a cold compress to alleviate swelling and to numb pain. Reduce blood flow to the area and swelling is alleviated. Cold constricts nerve endings and dulls pain.

3. Apply hydrocortisone cream to minimize itching and burning. Fire ant bites produce red hives that turn into blisters. Infection and scarring occur if the blisters are scratched. Hydrocortisone cream provides topical relief and creates a sanitary barrier over the bite.

4. Take an oral antihistamine to reduce pain and itching. Oral antihistamines provide additional itch relief when used with hydrocortisone cream.

5. Apply a simple solution of half bleach and half water to new bites. The mixture reduces pain, itching and blister formation. Apply the solution immediately for maximum effectiveness.

6. Avoid fire ants by being attentive. Landscape beds, vegetable gardens, water bodies and trash cans attract fire ants. Wear protective clothing in known fire ant areas. Tucking your pant legs into your socks provides adequate protection, when boots are not available. Insect repellent temporarily discourages ants from approaching.
