Problems Caused By Lipitor

Lipitor is a medication often prescribed for people who have high cholesterol. It lowers bad cholesterol, or LDL, and triglycerides while also raising good cholesterol levels, or HDL. It can also be used to treat congestive heart failure. Lipitor works by limiting the body's production of fatty substances. In many cases, doctors prescribe a change in diet along with Lipitor to help bring cholesterol levels into a healthy range.

Liver Problems

Lipitor can cause the liver to begin to fail. Doctors will often order blood tests before patients begin to take Lipitor and also while they are taking it to see if it is affecting the organ.

Muscle Problems

Muscle problems such as pain or weakness can develop in some people taking Lipitor, more commonly in people who take Lipitor with other medications. If you experience muscle weakness or pain for no known reason, contact your doctor.

Kidney Trouble

Kidney trouble sometimes develops in patients who begin experiencing muscle problems while taking Lipitor. This can lead to kidney failure.

Serious Side Effects

Some side effects of Lipitor may signal that another serious problem has developed. If you experience dark urine, fatigue, stomach pain or nausea and vomiting call your doctor immediately.

Common Side Effects

Several side effects sometimes reported by patients taking Lipitor are not an indication of a serious condition, including headaches, constipation, rash, diarrhea and gas.
