Clear Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion is a fact of life for many people. If you suffer from allergies, it's an everyday occurrence. But even acute congestion is distracting and debilitating. There are several over-the-counter remedies available, and they are very helpful for acute and severe congestion, but really shouldn't be taken long-term. Also, due to recent regulations, many of these formulas have changed, and may not be as effective as they once were.

There are several home remedies that are gentle, soothing and can be used every day. Two of the most common remedies for congestion are menthol and eucalyptus. Both have a very strong, soothing aroma that cuts through congestion.

Nasal irrigation, with a neti pot, also clears congestion and moistens and cleanses the nasal membranes. Neti pots have grown in popularity over the years, and can even be found at stores like Walgreens.

Instructions

Eucalyptus Steam

1. Fill a large ceramic bowl with about 4 cups of hot-to-boiling water

2. Drop 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil into the water. If eucalyptus oil is not available, substitute 1 tbsp. of mentholated ointment.

3. Place your face over the bowl and cover your head with a towel.

4. Breathe in the steam.

5. Reheat the bowl in the microwave when the water cools.

Menthol/Eucalyptus Tea

6. Place two mentholated cough drops in a large mug.

7. Fill the mug with boiling water and stir until the cough drop melts

8. Add lemon and honey to taste.

9. Drink while inhaling the steam through the nose.

Neti Pot

10. Fill a neti pot with 8 oz. of warm water and 1/4 tsp. of salt.

11. Standing over the sink, tilt your head to one side, so one nostril is directed upward. Pour about half the contents of the neti pot down the upturned nostril.

12. Lean forward over the sink to let the water drain out of your nose.

13. Repeat with the other nostril.

14. Remove any remaining water by gently blowing through the nose.
